Seawall Construction to Begin Off PCH

The barrier is designed to prevent erosion caused by large, hurricane-generated waves

Construction will begin Wednesday off southbound Pacific Coast Highway on a seawall designed to protect a beachside slope from erosion caused by large waves.

The waves, generated by hurricanes off Mexico, have eroded slopes along PCH near Pena Road. The erosion has exposed a utility line that runs along the coastal road in Malibu near Las Tunas State Beach.

One lane of southbound PCH will be closed at times on Wednesday for the delivery of construction materials, Caltrans officials said. Once the materials are delivered, the rest of the work will continue behind concrete barriers.

The bike lane will be unavailable to cyclists and pedestrians, according to Caltrans.

Construction work on the 50-foot long seawall is expected to be finished by late October.
