State park officials say California's drought is forcing them for the first time this year to close a campground to overnight use.
Vicky Waters of the state's Department of Parks and Recreation said Monday that the Portola Redwoods State Park nestled in the coastal mountains about 40 miles northeast of Santa Cruz will be closed to overnight campers starting Wednesday and remain off-limits for the rest of the season.
Day visitors can still use the park, but Waters says there's too little water in Peters Creek, the park's main supply, to accommodate overnight guests. Campers with reservations will get refunds.
Officials say dry conditions also have forced them to bring in portable toilets for visitors to the opulent Hearst Castle.
They've also locked up the showers at El Capitan State Beach north of Santa Barbara.
