Small Plane Crashes on Prison Grounds in Norco

Correctional personnel were assisting firefighters in knocking down the small fire that erupted after the crash.

A single-engine plane crashed Monday within a prison compound in Norco, sparking a fire and causing unknown injuries to the pilot.

The crash was reported about 12:10 p.m. at the California Rehabilitation Center on Fifth Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

A battalion chief at the scene said the Cessna plane went down in an area of the prison under construction.

The condition of the pilot was not immediately known. No injuries were reported among staff or inmates.

There was no word on where the plane departed from, though four airports are in the vicinity -- Chino Municipal, Corona Municipal, Riverside Municipal and Ontario International.

The FAA could not immediately be reached for comment.
