Memorial at UC Berkeley For Annais Rittenberg, Camp Counselor Killed Near Yosemite

Friends, family remember Annais Rittenberg

The camp counselor killed by a falling tree near Yosemite last week was remembered Tuesday as an amazing woman, a free spirit, who will be sorely missed.

More than 600 people turned out for a memorial service for 21-year-old Annais Rittenberg at the Alumni House on the University of California Berkeley campus, where her father teaches.

Rittenberg, a student at UC Santa Cruz, died at Camp Tawonga on the morning of July 3 when an oak tree fell on her.

Counselors from the camp were provided free bus service to attend Tuesday’s memorial.

Her brother, Adam Rittenberg, talked about his loss.

"I miss her squeaky voice, her laugh, her enthusiasm,” Rittenberg said. β€œI've lost a sister and my best friend. My wife is giving birth in October and our son will never meet his aunt. But he will know her, I'll make sure of it"

It hasn't been determined why that tree fell last week.

Another service for Rittenberg is planned for Saturday in San Francisco.

Rittenberg's 160 co-workers all stayed on the job following the fatal accident.
