Mammoth Mountain Opening Day: Snowy Kick-Off

The 2016-2017 was gimammothnormous big, snow-wise; now eager slopes fans look to the promising winter months to come.

NO ONE WOULD DARE MAKE A COMMENT, or sniff, or roll an eye, or do anything derogatory in the least if you were to say that, as a skier, or a board buff, you're not quite over the winter of 2016-2017. For, truly, how could you possibly be? Copious amounts of snow fell atop various California peaks, and at busy slopes-y destination Mammoth Mountain, records kept breaking, or melting, or whatever snow-based records do when they've been smashed. The snowiest month on record at Mammoth happened in January 2017 with over a week to go in the month, for starters. And finding a building you knew to be located in a particular place? There were some days when the merest hint of a chalet's roofline was visible. So schussing into the new season, which opens at Mammoth on Thursday, Nov. 9, will surely bring with it the memories of the season so recently passed (and we do mean "recently," as skiing ended in early August, making for the second longest ski season on record at the resort).

AN IMPRESSIVE SNOWSTORM... arrived ahead of the first day of summer, and more snow in early November is giving the area a frosty feel, but several opening weekend events'll happen off the runs, too. Live tunes on the deck at The Sundowner on Friday and Saturday afternoons, a beer toast, a movie screening, and more warm-up, head-inside haps will be afoot. Of course, you may just want to go where the chairs are going, and that's cool, too. The first chair for the season is scheduled to move at 8:30 on Nov. 9, which is also the moment of the "...annual banner breakthrough at Broadway Express."
