Homeless Man Survives Being Compacted Twice in Garbage Bin in Fremont

Fremont police say a homeless man sleeping in a garbage bin is pretty lucky to be alive after he survived two compaction cycles when the bin was dumped into a trash truck.

According to the police log, the 44-year-old man was sleeping inside a large trash bin behind a restaurant Tuesday when a trash truck collected it and used the compactor.

The truck driver went to a fast food restaurant, collected trash from another bin there and again used the compactor, the log states.

The man was able to crawl out through an opening in the roof the next time the truck stopped at another store.

Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques told the Oakland Tribune the man was very lucky to have survived the compaction without serious injuries.

The man, who suffers from mental health issues, was taken to a hospital to be checked.
