Passenger Opens Fire on Officers After Traffic Stop: Police

A man matching a description of the gunman was in custody after a morning search

Four people were in custody after officers and a passenger who ran from a vehicle exchanged gunfire Monday morning following a traffic stop in Fullerton.

The shooting occurred after an officer and trainee attempted to stop a sport utility vehicle driver for a traffic violation near Euclid Street and Williamson Avenue. The driver sped away, leading to a short pursuit, during which a passenger armed with a handgun ran from the SUV and opened fire on officers, police said.

A second exchange of gunfire was reported nearby after a third officer arrived in response to the shooting report. Authorities said the officers and subject were not struck by gunfire.

Officers set up a perimeter and, hours later, located a man matching the description of the gunman near Williamson and Woods avenues, police said. That man, the driver and two passengers were taken into custody early Monday, police said.

Officers continued to search for rounds and the subject's weapon, but authorities said they recovered a gun holster and the attacker's shirt on train tracks near Euclid Street. A K9 team joined the search at a nearby strip mall.

The 25-year-old suspected gunman, a Pomona resident, was booked on suspicion of felony assault on a police officer. The suspect has "an extensive criminal history," according to police.

The SUV driver was booked on suspicion of evading officers. One passenger was booked for possession of narcotics, and a second passenger was in custody due to outstanding warrants, police said.
