Residents of two Fullerton neighborhoods awoke over the Father's Day weekend to find fliers urging them to join the Klu Klux Klan, police said Monday.
About 100 fliers placed in plastic bags were distributed in the 400 block of West Amerige Avenue and 200 block of North Yale Avenue, which are about a mile apart, Fullerton Police Department officials said. A rock and Tootsie Pop were also found inside each of the bags.
"It was an awful thing to wake up to in the morning," said resident and mother Nicole Deford. She believes the fliers were put out as a result of the fatal Charleston, South Carolina church shooting that killed nine people.
"I'm sure that's exactly what their intent was. They thought they could jump on an opportunity to perhaps capitalize on a very tragic event," she said.
The fliers included purported statistics about crimes involving minorities, as well as a KKK website address and a phone number.
Police, however, say the message was not threatening and therefore not criminal.
"These leaflets and pamphlets do not contain any specific threat, they're just inviting members of the community to log onto their website to find out more about their organization," said Fullerton Police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel.

Similar recruiting fliers were found outside homes in Santa Ana in January on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Last July, another KKK flier showed up in Orange with messages about immigration.
