Firefighters Extinguish Blaze, Save Animals at Westchester Petco

LAFD firefighters are investigating whether a roofing operation that took place over the week has anything to do with the fire

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that burned the roof of a Petco store in Westchester on Wednesday morning. The Los Angeles City Fire Department received the call around 5:15 a.m., and dispatched more than 100 firefighters to South Sepulveda Boulevard.

First responding units, about 55 firefighters, were able to extinguish the fire in 24 minutes.

The blaze was contained to the roof and attic of the two-story pet supply store before it could spread to adjoining businesses.

No animals were killed, according to LAFD Battalion Chief Armando Hogan. At least 12 dogs along with hamsters and goldfish -- firefighters removed large fish tanks from the building -- on the floor of the store were rescued by firefighters.

The LAFD is still investigating the cause of the fire. Officials are looking into roofing construction that was done on the building over the course of the week.

The intersection of Sepulveda and La Tijera boulevards remained closed until around 7 a.m. while firefighters cleaned up the area.
