Father Dies Attempting to Save Son in Whitewater River

A man was found dead and a juvenile was critically injured Monday in the Whitewater River in the Whitewater Canyon area, north of Palm Springs.

Witnesses told KMIR that they saw a child fall into the water and the father went into the river to try to save him.

The Riverside Country Fire Department received a call at 1:17 p.m. of a possible drowning involving two or three people in the Whitewater River near the Interstate 10 bridge.

Fire rescue crews, Riverside County sheriff's officials, Palm Springs police and the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

About two hours later, authorities announced that one man was found dead and that a juvenile was hospitalized in critical condition.

No other people were missing, sheriff's officials said.

Whitewater Cut Off Road was closed at the bridge over the Whitewater River due to the death investigation.
