Used Hypodermic Needles Spill on El Sobrante Road

The California Highway Patrol shut down a portion of an El Sobrate road Tuesday morning after about 100 used hypodermic needles spilled all over the road.

Originally, the report was that between 1,000 and 2,000 needles spilled. But a CHP officer told NBC Bay Area that only between 50 and 100 needles likely fell off, or were thrown off, a vehicle. They were contained in two boxes.

The CHP logged the spill on Santa Rita Road near Appian Way about 5 a.m. The road was closed in both directions, as hazardous materials crews cleaned up the needles.

Officers spotted a phone number on the container of needles but hadn't identified to whom they belonged.
