El Camino Plows Into Church, Barber Shop in South Los Angeles

The driver was arrested Saturday night after the crashing his 1965 Chevrolet into a barber shop and adjacent church

A man was arrested Saturday night after crashing his classic Chevrolet pickup into an empty church and occupied barber shop in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 7:16 p.m. in the 7400 block of Western Avenue, and involved no injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The front end of the driver's 1965 Chevrolet El Camino was smashed from driving into the building, said LAFD's Brian Humphrey.

Barber shop owner Lillie Alexander said she was working with her husband when she heard a noise. Next thing she knew, a car was hitting the building.

Alexander said her husband had moved from the window "just in the nick of time," and was three feet away from being it.

"To God be the glory for that," she told NBC4 News.

Alexander said the driver of the Chevrolet was very nice, and said the car had gotten away from him.

A building inspector checked the church and barber shop and determined the structure was still sound. Though Alexander's window is shattered from the crash, she says she is just grateful that no one got hurt.

It is unknown what led to the crash.
