Drought-Conscious Hayward Couple Uses 37 Gallons of Water A Day

The average couple uses nearly 200 gallons of water a day.

But a drought-conscious Hayward couple is living on significantly less than that at 37 gallons of water a day.

One method Dan and Colleen Dalton uses to save water is by washing their vegetables over a bucket. Water collected in the bucket in turn is used to water their garden.

The Daltons also have a shower strategy to conserve water. The couple catches the water from the shower while waiting for it to warm up.

"After I gather the water I turn the water off, soap up and then turn it back on," Dan Dalton said. "It's called a Navy shower and it saves a lot of water that way."

The couple said conserving water is not hard and encourages California residents to stop, think and not let water run down the sink.
