Boogie Boarder From Mountain View Dies From Injuries in Santa Cruz

Dangerous conditions along the coast in Santa Cruz are blamed for the death of a boogie boarder.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel said a set of big waves sent him crashing into the rocks near the Santa Cruz Lighthouse Friday afternoon.

Two rescue swimmers jumped in to help, but the surf was so rough they too suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital.

A second set of rescuers managed to pull the boogie boarder out, but it was too late. Two rescuers were treated for minor injuries.

The man, identified as 47-year-old James Zenk of Mountain View, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department is urging the community to be aware  of ocean conditions prior to entering the water and be prepared for changes.
