5-Alarm Fire Injures 1, Damages Several Buildings Near Spartan Stadium in San Jose

One person was critically injured and several buildings were damaged in a five-alarm fire that burned in San Jose near Spartan Stadium Saturday morning, according to fire Capt. Rob Brown.

Around 3:30 a.m. a fire broke out in a warehouse at South Seventh Street and East Alma Avenue, fire officials said.

The blaze went on to damage multiple warehouses, many storage units, and a few commercial buildings, Brown said. Four businesses were lost by the time firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Some of the damaged shops include a company housing wooden pallets, which gave the fire plenty of fuel. San Jose firefighters said six agencies battling the fire helped keep it from spreading, as there is a number of nearby businesses including a school bus yard.

"We did have mutual aid from multiple agencies, six agencies within our county," San Jose fire spokesman Cleo Doss said. "So you had Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara City, Santa Clara County, and Milpitas also came into our city to assist us in putting this fire out."

One person suffering from burn injuries was transported to a hospital, according to Brown. He is thought to be an employee at one of the businesses burned.

Fire officials said the first call reporting the fire was given to another crew on a medical call that saw the smoke.

No official cause of the fire has been reported.

About 90 firefighters were called to battle the blaze.
