Thanks to slightly warmer than usual temperatures this winter, "our color is coming earlier, so people should come sooner," said Fred Clark, general manager of The Flower Fields, which opened earlier this week.

The fields, which are packed with thickly petalled ranunculus flowers, attract more than 100,000 visitors each year. Locals bring visiting relatives, tourists arrive by the busload, and school children come for the day on field trips to learn about the life cycle of plants.

The Flower Fields opened Monday and this year's visiting season ends May 9. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
