Google to Buy Yahoo?

The dominant search engine is exploring a possible bid to buy its sagging rival, a newspaper reports.

In a move that could unite the world's pre-eminent internet search engine with a rival that once dominated the same business, Google is considering buying Yahoo, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

Google Inc. has talked to at least two private equity firms about potentially helping them finance a deal to buy Yahoo Inc.'s core business, the newspaper said on its website.

Mountain View-based Google has not yet put together a formal bid, the newspaper said, and may not do so.

Any deal to merge the two search companies would likely attract the attention of antitrust regulators, the newspaper said. Microsoft is also considering a bid for Yahoo.

The newspaper cited a person familiar with the matter as the source of its information.
