3 Americans Share Nobel Prize for Medicine

Work has implications for cancer and aging research

Three’s company for this year’s Noble Prize winners in medicine.

Americans Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak won the prestigious award for work on chromosomes with implications for cancer and aging research, The Associated Press reported.

"The discoveries by Blackburn, Greider and Szostak have added a new dimension to our understanding of the cell, shed light on disease mechanisms, and stimulated the development of potential new therapies," the prize committee in Sweden said in a statement.

The honor includes a 10 million kronor ($1.4 million) cash award.
