Shoe Thrower Gets Three Years

The Iraqi journalist who threw a shoe at former President George W. Bush received his comeuppance Thursday.

A Baghdad court sentenced Muntazer al-Zaidi to three years in prison for lobbing his loafer at a world leader.

"This sentence is harsh and is not in harmony with the law, and eventually the defense team will contest this in the appeals court," said Dhiaa al-Saadi, the head of Zaidi's defense team.

Al-Zeidi says his action was a "natural response to the occupation" and he shouted "long live Iraq" when the verdict was read.

Al-Zeidi has been in Iraqi custody since he hurled shoes at Bush during a joint news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in December. It has become one of the iconic images of the nearly 6-year-old war.
