Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans has died after a longtime battle with cancer.

Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans died at age 48 Wednesday evening after losing a longtime battle with cancer, TMZ reported.

Evans is the second member of the southern rock band to die this year -- former keyboardist Billy Powell died in January.

His death was also announced on the band's official Web site Thursday by the remaining members, who said the musician would be "sorely missed" by loved ones and the music community.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend Ean. Ean put up a valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans," the Web site read.

"Our hearts go out to the Evans family," the Web site read.

"He's our brother; he's not just a bass player in the band," Lynyrd Skynyrd lead singer Johnny Van Zantsaid in April.

Three other members of the band, famous for hits like "Sweet Home Alabama," died in a 1977 plane crash.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is currently on tour in Europe.
