Missing Boaters Found Safe

Two boaters who went missing after leaving Santa Catalina Island were found Monday about 200 miles away, about four miles off Pismo Beach.

A Coast Guard HC-130, which had taken off from Air Station Sacramento after daybreak Monday, found the white, 27-foot 1973 Coronado sailing vessel about 4 p.m., Coast Guard Petty Officer Petty Officer Angela Ford said.

The crew of the aircraft had searched an area of more than 2,200 square miles before spotting the boat and its crew. They then escorted the boat into Port San Luis, where Coast Guard Station Morro Bay personnel will conduct a post search and rescue boarding to determining what caused the vessel's communication failure.

Zebulon Tryon, 21, and Chris Reuter, a man of about 25, departed from Avalon Harbor Friday and were due to sail to Santa Cruz,Coast Guard Petty Officer Brent Reid said.

Tryon's family called the Coast Guard in Long Beach and said contact with him was lost after he set sail, Petty Officer Cory Mendenhall said.

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued by the Los Angeles-Long Beach Coast Guard Command Center, Mendenhall said.
