Lincoln Memorial to be Rededicated Today

Living historians, music performances and more

Four score and seven years ago, flappers were in, stocks were high, and President Warren Harding dedicated the Lincoln Memorial on May 30, 1922. This year also -- rather conveniently, might we add -- marks the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Funny how it all just comes together, right?

So today marks the rededication of the Lincoln Memorial. History fans should head over early: At 9:00 and 9:30 a.m., living historians -- yes, they'll be portraying Honest Abe and Mary Todd themselves -- will be hanging out in the Lincoln Memorial chamber. At noon, 12:30, 1 and 1:30 p.m., another living history group will performing at the JFK hockey field (along the south side of the Reflecting Pool, near the Korean War Memorial).

Ceremony events get underway around 2:25 p.m. Catch a performance by the United States Marine Band and a reading of a poem by Lincoln biographer Carl Sanburg poem. Tuskegee University President Benjamin F. Payton will deliver the keynote speech. Admission to the ceremony is free, and attendants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Oh, and when you have a sec, go over and sign Lincoln's birthday card, too. It's traveled the country and is making its last stop in DC this weekend.
