A newlywed couple in Syria decided to take their wedding photos in the bullet-pocked streets and gutted buildings of the destroyed city of Homs, Feb. 5, 2016. The Syrian photographer thought the backdrop for the union of Nada Merhi, 18, and Syrian army soldier Hassan Youssef, 27, would carry the symbolic message: life is stronger than death. The Syrian conflict heated up in 2011 when when Arab Spring protests around the Middle East inspired Syrians to demonstrate against the Bashar al-Assad regime with protests that evolved into a civil war. The turmoil triggered a migrant crisis as refugees continue to flee to Europe and other regions to escape the violence.
