It's been 15 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks changed America forever. In San Diego, people are paying tribute to the lives lost with many local memorials, proving that the world will never forget Sept. 11, 2001.

On Saturday, interns with Senator Joel Anderson's office laid out 2,977 small American flags across the grass in Centennial Plaza at El Cajon City Hall. Each flag represents life lost in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Katie Downing helped place the flags at the plaza Saturday and told NBC 7 the flags help people visualize just how many people died that day. “This is a whole lot of flags,” she said.

“We hold [this memorial in El Cajon] for the community to get together and remember the lives lost on 9/11 – to commemorate and celebrate their lives,” Downing explained. The 9/11 memorial ceremony at Centennial Plaza in El Cajon City Hall (200 Civic Center Way) takes place at 11 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2016. Senator Joel Anderson will lead the ceremony.

A rescue truck used in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, made its first appearance in San Diego on Sept. 9, 2016. FDNY Rescue 5 debuted at the Toby Wells Family YMCA in Kearny Mesa as part of The Remembrance Rescue Project’s nationwide Coast to Coast Remembrance Tour, which aims to utilize the rescue truck as an educational tool, memorial and historical artifact.
