Tour de Fat Celebrates Bicycle

New Belgium Brewing’s traveling celebration of the bicycle is coming to San Diego.

Now in its 12th season, the Tour de Fat invites bike enthusiasts to put on their wildest costumes for a parade and ride to honor “mankind’s greatest invention."

A highlight of the event is the annual car-for-bike swap that takes place at each Tour de Fat stop. During this swap, one person commits to a year of living car-free. In exchange for his or her car keys, the swapper receives a hand-built Black Sheep commuter bike.

The event is free to participants, with proceeds from beer and merchandise sales benefitting the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and the San Diego Mountain Biking Association.

Parade registration begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Balboa Park in Golden Hill Park. Ride times are from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. with live entertainment from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
