Toreros Lose Despite Major Fouls

Roman Martinez scored 12 points and New Mexico used a stingy defense for a 57-54 win over San Diego on Wednesday night.

New Mexico (5-4) limited the Toreros to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor. The Lobos, who led 34-29 at halftime, won despite a big margin in fouls that enabled San Diego to hit 15 of 18 free throws. New Mexico was 8-for-11 from the free throw line.

San Diego (4-5), which lost its third straight game, was led by Matt Dorr's 12 points. But Dorr, who was 4-for-14 shooting, missed a 3-pointer with one second left that would have tied the game.

New Mexico's Daniel Faris had career highs in rebounds (13) and blocks (six).

Chad Toppert scored 11 points and Tony Danridge added 10 for the Lobos, who led the entire second half. New Mexico, which had a 48-38 lead with 14 minutes left, scored only two baskets the rest of the game.

But San Diego, which twice cut the lead to two points, did not score a basket in the final 8:58.
