How Tony Damico Got Local Producers to Live-Score Cult Classics

In 2013, Damico's happy accident became Beat Theatre, a live event where beat makers scored scenes from cult classic films

Back in 2009, producer Tony Damico, aka Onymico, developed an interesting routine -- he and a friend would drink beer while playing songs over a muted TV.

Part experimental fun, part happy accident, it was a casual practice that eventually developed into a full fledged movement -- one that shifted, in 2013, from a couple of guys having a good time to a live event where cutting edge beat makers scored scenes from pre-existing films, a sort of cinematic composition in real time -- now dubbed Beat Theatre.

"The concept happened as a half baked way to pass time with movie loving friends," Damico said.

Indeed, it's a formula Damico nurtured up in Long Beach, where he's based, but it isn't a fixed exhibition -- not at all. And this Sunday, April 14, he's presenting the showcase here in San Diego -- at the Kava Lounge.

Featuring producers Jillesque, Dungal, Gabonano, Al3jxndro, Tall Drk, Elos, Bry.zen, Koibito and Damico himself -- they plan on tackling crime drama 'Amores Perros' and the surreal left field fantasy 'Holy Mountain'.

Curated, in part, by Chula Vista's Gabriel Plascencia (Gabonano), who played his first re-scoring set five years ago via 'The Shining', he helped select the hometown talent and also decided on the movie 'Amores Perros'.

As a studio rat who's usually tucked away working on material, he sees it as a way to sharpen his live sets, as a means to improve.

"I learned how to play in front of an audience because of this event," Plascencia said.

No doubt, it's a mash-up space to be explored, and as Plascencia described it -- "A one-of-a-kind experience."
