Each month in San Diego it's getting harder and harder to produce these calendars. Why? Too much going on, so much to do, so many choices. Here are some of my choice offerings that are happening in SD, and let me tell you, our cup runneth over. Do me a favor, put the legends on the top of your list, artists that are in their legacy stage, don't miss out on seeing artists that paved the way, because you will thank me later. As a reminder, I help book shows at the Casbah and host Tuesday nights at the Merrow in Hillcrest every week, so stop by and say hello. Now, on with the listings:
June 2: Floodflower, Kenseth Thibideau and the Voices at the Casbah. It's a local show I helped book; you should go....
June 3: Winnetka Bowling League and Feelers at Soda Bar. A band named after a bowling league that thankfully doesn't wear bowling shirts and should be on your list of new bands to check out.
June 4: Toad the Wet Sprocket at the Belly Up. '90s melodic alt rockers that had some radio hits.
June 5: The Skints, the Amalgamated and San Diego City Soul Club DJs at the Casbah. British reggae meets San Diego ska.
June 6: Father John Misty and Jason Isbell at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. Two dudes that went solo from their respective bands and are here to entertain you. Fleet Foxes and Drive By Truckers are your reference points.
June 7: Sebadoh and Flower at the Casbah. '90s lo-fi indie rockers featuring Lou Barlow, also of Dinosaur Jr.
June 8: Together Pangea, Vundabar and Dehd at the Irenic. DIY garage rockers from Los Angeles that are sure to get the floor moving.
June 9: Bad Religion at the Observatory North Park, the Ataris at Brick by Brick and CJ Ramone at Soda Bar. Punk, punk and more punk -- pick one!
June 10: Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds at the Casbah. Kid Congo was in the Gun Club, the Cramps and played with Nick Cave!
June 11: Come to the Merrow for Jehlad, Tennessee Tina and Rodrigo Bars, where I am your host with the most. Join me, it's cheap. I am here any and every Tuesday.
June 12: John Paul White at Soda Bar. Half of the Americana duo Civil Wars -- just half.
June 13: RVG at Soda Bar. Visiting all the way from Melbourne, Australia, and on Fat Posssum Records, which should be enough to get you to go.
June 14: Pile and State Champion at Soda Bar. As a Pyles, it's a given I would like an indie rock band named Pile, and I do.
June 15: My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult at Brick by Brick. Wax Trax recording artists from Chicago that mix industrial and over-the-top showmanship.
June 16: Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons at Viejas Concerts in the Park. At 85, this man is like the energizer bunny, so go relive the music and "Grease" -- it's the word.
June 17: Lucinda Williams at the Belly Up. Living legends are harder and harder to come by, so come witness a legend in country, roots rock and Americana.
June 18: Jamila Woods and Duendita at the Casbah. Alternative R&B from this poet and activist from Chicago.
June 19: Local Natives and Middle Kids at the Observatory. Should be a night full of new music from these bands.
June 20: The Mattson 2 at the Belly Up. Local twins putting out instrumental jazz recognized worldwide.
June 21: Matthew Logan Vasquez (Delta Spirit), Walker Lukens and PR Newman at Soda Bar. We all love us some Delta Spirit, but what an amazing career MLV has had since going solo. Welcome him back to his old home for one night.
June 22: Scott Russo and Jason Cruz at the Casbah. Unwritten Law and Strung Out frontmen solo.
June 23: Tacocat and the Paranoyds at the Casbah. Tacocat is spelled the same front and back (a palindrome), but more importantly, they are a super fun band.
June 24: DJ Artistic's Hip Hop Battle Bot at the Casbah. Are you an aspiring rapper, producer or DJ? Then this is the event for you to show off and get noticed. Open to all levels of talent.
June 25: John Hiatt at the Belly Up. Recognized as one of the best songwriters of the 20th century.
June 26: Mini Mansions and Alexandra Savior at Casbah. Mini Mansions features members of Queens of the Stone Age, but sounds nothing like them.
June 27: Rooney at Soda Bar. On the Break the Wall tour, celebrating 20 years as a band.
June 28: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. One of the leaders of the swing dance movement that re-spawned in the late '90s.
June 29: Charly Bliss and Emily Reo at the Casbah. Charly Bliss might remind you of a band like Veruca Salt -- remember them?
June 30: Javier Escovedo, Hocus and Roger! at the Casbah. Full disclaimer: I booked this show, which features Javier Escovedo of SD's very first punk band the Zeros.
