This coming weekend offers up a multitude of fine jazz experiences, but I’d like to focus on four really special events.
Thursday: Joshua White NYC Quartet. Athenaeum Music & Arts library, 1008 Wall St., La Jolla
The volcanic pianist brings in New York heavyweights David Binney on alto saxophone with Mark Ferber on drums, along with LA bassist Hamilton Price for what’s sure to be a memorable musical affair. Tickets are $21 for Athenaeum members, $26 for the general public; 7:30-10:30 p.m. Best to arrive early for prime seats.
Friday: Clocked Out. Fresh Sound, Bread & Salt, 1955 Julian Ave., Sa Diego
Bonnie Wright’s experimental concert series continues, with Clocked Out, a duo featuring Vanessa Tomlinson on percussion with Erik Griswold on prepared piano and percussion. Expect "warped grooves and evocative soundscapes." Tickets are $15; 8 p.m.
Saturday: Daniel Jackson Week Celebration Concert. Dizzy’s. 4275 Mission Bay Drive, San Diego
San Diego’s legendary tenor saxophonist appears with veteran masters Roy McCurdy on drums, Marshall Hawkins on bass, George Bohanon on trombone, Evan Christopher on clarinet, and Bob Boss on guitar. Special guests include Dorothy Annette, Rich Rogers, Danny Barber and Trevor Orr. Tickets are $20; 8 p.m.
Sunday: Nathan Hubbard’s Nevertheless Quintet. Taoist Sanctuary, 4229 Park Blvd, San Diego
This is a CD-release party for Hubbard’s excellent new disc, Encinitas and Everything After. Hubbard will be playing vibraphone and will be joined by Ellen Weller on flute and soprano saxophone, J.P. Balmat on alto and baritone saxophone, Harley Magsino on bass, and Laurel Grinnell on drums. Tickets are $5; 8 p.m.
