With music available everywhere, it's impossible to hear everything and stay on top of new music that deserves attention and music that is just riding some wave or trend. I count on radio, blogs and friends to keep me in the loop.
When I recently got an e-mail about Jeremy Messersmith, initially I ignored it. Then I cycled back and clicked a link and was taken back by his single "Violet!" (right click for a free download), and I had to hear more. The musician from Minneapolis released his third album, The Reluctant Graveyard, on May 4 and is known for weekly blog posts and videos, and for connecting with his fans. At times compared to Elliott Smith -- or to the Beatles and Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys -- to me his music can be classified with contemporaries Nada Surf and Gomez. After listening to his two previous albums, it's no wonder he has a cover of "Skyway" (by Minnesota legends The Replacements) and can be found on YouTube sharing the stage with Graycoats, a band that released one of my favorite records of 2009, (though widely overlooked by just about everyone outside of the land of 10,000 lakes).
