Tonight is an unusual Monday. It used to be a little more obvious that we were L.A. adjacent, with cream of the crop shows happening on Fridays or Monday, around bands' L.A. dates. Perhaps that's happening tonight, or perhaps people are just starting to roll into town for spring break, but whatever the case, we win. At Music Box, the talented and unusual Kevin Barnes brings Of Montreal back to San Diego while Cage the Elephant go off the grid with a special acoustic -- no phones or photos allowed -- performance at California Center for the Arts Escondido. From grief and tragedy can come great art, as Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum and his latest album, "A Crow Looked at Me," is a loving tribute to his wife who died of cancer in 2016. He performs tonight at the Irenic. Larry and His Flask are at Soda Bar, Power Trip is at Casbah and Gavin Turek is at the Loft, but the big news of the night is the return of Kristin Kontrol ... formerly "Dee Dee" of Dum Dum Girls, but as San Diegans knew her, Kristin Gundred of Grand Ole Party. Her new project is excellent and allows her to stretch her creativity and sound, all on display tonight at the Hideout.
