Soledad Cross Gets Touch-Up

Painters have given the Mount Soledad cross its first paint job in more than 40 years.

The final strokes of the makeover were applied Tuesday with "golden rollers" on Tuesday morning at about 11 a.m. Bay Cal Painting donated all the work on the project, which would have cost about $40,000.

The 29-year cross was erected in in 1952 and had become weatherbeaten to the point that its mortar was completely exposed. The controversial cross is now a federal memorial that is open from sunrise to sunset.
