Simple Cell Phone Dials Up Success

Jitterbug grows in North County

A Del Mar cell phone company that is bucking industry trends is expanding into North County and looking to hire hundreds of new employees.

Jitterbug's phones buck the industry trend: While other cell phones companies are adding fancy high tech features to their wireless phones, the folks at the company opening up a North County location are keeping it simple.

The phones don't surf the web, they don't have caller ID, they don't use GPS. What they can do, though, is make it easy for young children and older adults to stay connected. Jitterbug phones are easy to use, with large back-lit buttons, a bright screen and large text.  They've found a niche in the market, and it's paying off.

The company that owns Jitterbug, the Del Mar-based GreatCall, is expanding its operations to Carlsbad. The company has a new 23,000-square-foot customer-care and sales call center that is scheduled for completion in May 2009. The center will house more than 200 employees, and the company has already started hiring.
