Thousands Attracted to Bright, Shiny Objects

Large crowds will be in San Diego this weekend to ogle eye-popping bling.

The 20th annual Gem Faire (that's their "e"; we're all lucky it's not "olde," too) kicks off Friday at noon at the Scottish Rite Event Center -- another name we would investigate if we had 10 minutes -- on Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley. How many Scots can there be here?

It'll cost you 5 bucks to be dazzled by gems, beads, crystals, minerals and something organizers are calling "findings," but that is a light touch considering you can stick around all weekend. Well, leave your sleeping bag at home; you'll have to come back on Saturday and Sunday morning when the doors reopen at 10. Organizers are handing out door prizes every hour all weekend, so remember to bring a pickup truck to haul all your loot home.
