County residents woke up to frigid temperatures on Friday morning.
The National Weather Service is reporting record low temperatures in Southern California. Preliminary data from Thursday showed a low of 18 degrees in Palmdale, beating the old record set in 2006 by 2 degrees. At the University of California, Los Angeles, temperatures dropped to 40 degrees, beating the old record of 41 degrees set in 1970.
At the Ramona airport, it got down to 28 on Thursday. Residents in that community can take cold comfort in the knowledge that the record low for Ramona on Dec. 18 is 26 degrees.
It's possible that it was even colder on Friday morning around the county. So far, there are no officials low temperatures for the day -- the National Weather Service does not usually release the daily figures until 4-5 p.m. However, a survey of weather stations around the county reported lows in the 20s and 30s in East County.
Residents in both Scripps Ranch and Mission Hills reported seeing frost on their windshields, and, as everybody knows, water freezes at 32 degrees.
