Fall in San Diego is my favorite time of the year, and Rocktober is my favorite month! We are overwhelmed with a cornucopia of selections, a virtual plethora of shows to choose from and these are mine! Please try to support local music when you can ...

Oct. 1: El Ten Eleven at the Music Box -- atmospheric post-rock sounds.

Oct. 2: Alice in Chains and the New Regime at Copley Symphony Hall. The original lead singer passed away years ago, but the band trudges on with local openers the New Regime, featuring Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin.

Oct. 3: Clint Westwood, Quel Bordel, Coral Bell and Forkroot at Casbah serve up cult country, Irish jig and world punk sounds.

Oct. 4: Shonen Knife and the Rosalyns at the Casbah -- Japanese pop-punk from Osaka with SD's ladies of '60s rock, the Rosalyns, in support.

Oct. 5: S U R V I V E at Soda Bar, for fans of Stranger Things.

Oct. 6: Failure at the Music Box -- '90s alt-rock legends and frontman Ken Andrews is from North County.

Oct. 7: AVI Buffalo and Buddy Banter at Soda Bar -- full name Avigdor Benyamin Zahner-Isenberg with locals Buddy Banter providing the support.

Oct. 8: La Sera and Springtime Carnivore at the Hideout. La Sera features an ex Vivian Girl.

Oct. 9: Kula Shaker and the Loons at the Belly Up -- some UK psych-rock with local psych-rock.

Oct. 10: Dirty Pennies, the Phantoms and Mittens at the Casbah. Support local music!

Oct. 11: Radio Halloran Presents Bosswitch, LiquidLight and Nebula Drag at the Merrow. It's free with RSVP, so support local music!

Oct. 12: Honne at the Loft -- debut album, "Warm on a Cold Night," is out now and it's perfect modern baby-making music.

Oct. 13: The Selecter at the Casbah, UK Two Tone Ska legends.

Oct. 14: Maryjane's Underground with the Wild Fires and Palos Verdes at the Hard Rock Hotel, and it's free for you and me.

Oct. 15: Prophets of Rage at Sleep Train Amphitheatre make America rage again!

Oct. 16: The Julie Ruin at the Music Box, featuring Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, who just released a new song.

Oct. 17: The Yawpers at Soda Bar -- straight ahead rock 'n' roll from Denver.

Oct. 18: The Faint and Gang of Four at Observatory North Park bring a night of new and old post-punk.

Oct. 19: JPNSGRLS at Til Two Club are garage pop from Canada.

Oct. 20: Missing Persons at the Belly Up, because nobody walks in LA.

Oct. 21: Tricky at the Belly Up. He's a trip-hop legend and an actor; have you seen him in "The Fifth Element"?

Oct. 22: 91x Presents Ye Scallywag with Bad Religion, NOFX, Against Me!, Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish at Waterfront Park: food, beer and punk rock.

Oct. 23: Violent Femmes at Observatory North Park. If you really add it up, you should be here or be gone daddy gone.

Oct. 24: K Flay at the Casbah, a 91x Presents show inspired by M.I.A.

Oct. 25: Radio Halloran Presents the Art Dealers, the Gift Machine and Noble War at the Merrow. Support local music, because it's free with RSVP.

Oct. 26: Preoccupations and Methyl Ethel at the Irenic -- headliner used to be called Viet Cong.

Oct. 27: The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Supersuckers and Jesse Dayton at the Casbah. Drink up buttercup, and make sure to have a designated driver.

Oct. 28: Death From Above 1979, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Deap Vally at the House of Blues or Fidlar, the Frights and SWMRS at Observatory North Park, yew!

Oct. 29: The Suicide Machines at the Irenic -- the return of the '90s punk legends from Detroit.

Oct. 30: The Psychedelic Furs at the Belly Up. Love my way 'cause I'm pretty in pink.

Oct. 31: 91x Loudspeaker Presents Rocket From the Crypt, Mrs. Magician, the Creepy Creeps and Beehive & the Barracudas at the Lafayette Hotel. Casbah presents a Halloween Party like the old days ...
