Pyles Picks Hot June Music

Pyles shares his picks for live music throughout June

Let's have some fun, grab some friends, and go see some live music! Come on, do it! Music will make you feel better! So summer is here -- almost, anyway -- but technically Memorial Day is the unofficial start of the summer season, which means it's time to get out of the house. Here in SoCal we can go out with ease 365 days a year. Anyone coming from other parts of the country have had to deal with weather -- our weather is paradise!  Go see a show and try to support some local music! But do me a favor: leave the flip flops for the beach...

June 1: Modern Baseball, Joyce Manor, Thin Lips at House of Blues. Modern Baseball's new album, "Holy Ghost," is out now, and it's glorious! Can't wait to see this triple-threat bill!

June 2: Yeasayer, Young Magic at Observatory. Eclectic electronic rock with a head trip in mind.

June 3: Maryjane's Underground with Noble War, Kid Wilderness at Hard Rock Hotel. The shows are free, with a suggested donation always going to a great cause!

June 4: The So So Glos, Honduras, the Kabbs at Soda Bar. The new album, "Kamikaze" was produced by Swami John Reis and engineered by Ben Moore at Big Fish Studios. The band is from Brooklyn, and they are showing SD some respect -- nice!

June 5: X-Fest with the Offspring, Cheap Trick, Iration, Kongos, Wolfmother, Chevy Metal, the Shelters, SWMRS, the Frights, Grace Mitchell, the Young Wild at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. That is a lot of bang for your buck. Sounds like fun to me, and yes, I work at 91x.

June 6: Caravan Palace, Bakkuda at Observatory. Electro swing from Paris, France, where the ladies wear no... well, you finish the diddy.

June 7: La Luz, the Gloomies at the Hideout. Surf-rock doo-wop, everybody sings, say hello to the ladies!

June 8: Gavin Turek, Monogem, Jara at Casbah. Gavin is a disco pop princess.

June 9: The Dollyrots, Go Betty Go, the Touchies at Soda Bar. A night of punk rock with each band featuring the talents of some kick ass ladies!

June 10: Pale Dian at Whistle Stop Bar, or Arbor Labor Union at the Hideout. I can't decide -- you pick!

June 11: PUP, Rozwell Kid, Charly Bliss at Soda Bar. I love PUP! They are from Canada.

June 12: Holy F--- at Casbah. Don't let the name scare you; it's an electronic rock band from Toronto, Canada.

June 13: Yukon Blonde, the Zolas at Casbah. Another band from Canada, but this time it's indie rock. Did you know they used to be called Alphababy? Me either.

June 14: Bad Cop/Bad Cop, the Atom Age, Murderburgers at Soda Bar. A fun tour making a stop in SD, so since they believe in taking the time to come here, you should get off your couch and go see them.

June 15: Slipknot, Marilyn Manson at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. Goth-rock/metal showdown!

June 16: My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult at Casbah. Can't wait to hear the band's biggest hit, "Sex on Wheelz," loud and in person!

June 17: Tokyo Police Club, We Were Promised Jetpacks at Belly Up. A night of epic indie rock. These amazing bands have come a long way to play for you, so give them the respect they deserve. Buy a T-shirt while you're at it.

June 18: SoundDiego Summmer Splash at Harrah's SoCal with the Mowgli's, Grizzly Business. Swim in the lazy river and let the world float by as you're washed in tuneage at this epic pool party hosted by Robin Roth! Tickets and more info available here.

June 19: Total Chaos at Brick by Brick. The hardcore punkers are back!

June 20: Lee "Scratch" Perry at Belly Up. The king of tripped out dub-style reggae returns.

June 21: The Blank Tapes, the Pesos, the Rotten Mangos at Casbah. Turn on, tune in, drop out!

June 22: Cage the Elephant, Portugal the Man, Sunflower Bean at Valley View Casino Center. Epic triple bill!

June 23: Cherry Glazerr, Sex Stains at Irenic. Slave to the Glaze tour!

June 24: The Jacksons at the San Diego County Fair. Hologram Michael? Not yet, but it will happen.

June 25: Vanilla Ice, Rob Base, Color Me Badd, Tone Loc, Candyman at Valley View Casino Center. I wanna rock right now! I'm Rob Base, and I came to get down! I'm not internationally known, but I'm known to rock the microphone! An epic line up of '90s hip-hop and R&B.

June 26: Pity Sex, Pwr Bttm, Petal at Irenic. It's all ages, and they have adult beverages! Support touring bands!

June 27: International Dips---, Bitchin' Seahorse, Zombie Barbie at Soda Bar. This night might get weird, and weird is good!

June 28: The Hollows, G Burns Jug Band, Second Cousins at Soda Bar. Indie folk-rock and bluegrass for the urban hillbilly.

June 29: Kut U Up, Buckfast Superbee, Tightwads at Belly Up. Riding in vans with boys! Ask Chris Cote, Kut U Up frontman, if his kids have seen the movie!

June 30: "Pet Sounds" with Brian Wilson at the San Diego County Fair. The 50th anniversary of the album's release was just celebrated -- 50 years!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have been enticed to go check out one or two, maybe three shows. Somehow I created a life for myself that involves my going to see a show usually five nights a week -- it's all I ever wanted and more. Now go see a show and get inspired!
