The band got their start in 1985 in Buffalo, New York. Fun fact: They got their name from a "True Detective" ad for a toy called a Goo Goo Doll.

"We were young and we were a garage band not trying to get a deal. We had a gig that night and needed a name. It's the best we came up with, and for some reason it stuck. If I had five more minutes, I definitely would have picked a better name," Rzeznik (pictured right) explained in an interview.

Takac (pictured) was originally the lead singer for the group. By the time they released their third album, 1990's "Hold Me Up," Rzeznik was featured as the singer on five tracks. From then on, he'd end up singing most of the band's songs.

Soon thereafter, Rzeznik was approached and asked to write a song for the soundtrack to the "City of Angels" film. He ended up writing "Iris" -- which would go on to become the band's biggest hit to date.
