For the unfamiliar, the G3 tour makes its way around the country every year with Joe Satriani and a rotating cast of virtuoso guitarists.

Satriani founded the tour in 1995 and kicked it off in 1996 with Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Adrian Legg were opening acts.

Collen, pictured here, is best known as the lead guitarist for hard rock/metal juggernauts Def Leppard.

And coincidentally, Def Leppard just announced a San Diego show at Petco Park with Journey on Sept. 23!

Petrucci is perhaps best known as the founding member of the prog-metal band Dream Theater. He's performed on the G3 tour seven times -- more than any other invited guitarist.

In 2012, Guitar World magazine ranked Petrucci as the 17th greatest guitarist of all time. (Petrucci shown here with bassist Dave LaRue)

He's well known for his high-speed alternate picking style which, as he himself claims, requires a "strong sense of synchronization between the two [playing] hands."

Petrucci's style is also notable for frequent use of the seven-string electric guitar, which he says he uses as a writing tool, taking advantage of the extended range for heavier riffing and to play extended range runs as part of a solo. (Drummer Mike Mangini pictured here)

He's a long-time user of MusicMan guitars, Mesa Boogie amplifiers, Dunlop, and TC Electronic (he has his own signature models with each).

He's a 15-time Grammy Award nominee, and has sold more than 10 million albums -- making him the the best-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time.
