The group formed after the disbandment of Abasi's previous metalcore band, Reflux. After taking a year off to study music, he took up an offer from heavy metal label Prosthetic Records to record a solo album.

The name Animals As Leaders was inspired by Daniel Quinn's 1992 novel, "Ishmael," which addresses anthropocentrism. Abasi decided on the name as a reminder "that we're all essentially animals."

In 2009, the band released their self-titled debut album and quickly launched them into being a trend-setting group in their genre worldwide.
