Phil's BBQ Opens in North County

The line at Phil’s BBQ in Point Loma is notoriously long. Now the company has taken their famous tangy barbecue sauce north, to San Marcos.

The company opened its doors to the public on Tuesday next to In-N-Out Burger on San Marcos Blvd.

About 100 customers were in line before the doors opened at 11 a.m., according to the North County Times.

"We got here about 9 a.m. We've been waiting a couple hours," Bill Doll told the paper. He was one of the first customers in line, along with his wife and three children. "We were going to get here earlier, but when we saw the rain, we figured that not a lot of people would come out early."

City Council members said they were happy with the new addition.

"We don't have a barbecue place in San Marcos, so it gives us diversity we didn't previously have," Councilwoman Rebecca Jones told the paper.

Phil's BBQ first opened in Mission Hills in 1998, but moved to Point Loma in 2006 after neighbors complained about the woodsmoke wafting from the company’s grills.

The company is considering opening more stores in La Mesa, Oceanside and Carlsbad.

The famous Phil's BBQ Sauce is also being carried at several Costco locations and online.

Phil's BBQ was recently voted "Best BBQ 2010" for the San Diego California Restaurant Association Gold Medallion Awards.
