Local Veterans Brand Themselves for Employment

Job fair for veterans focuses on branding their military skills.

More and more veterans are returning to civilian life after serving our country and one of their biggest struggles is finding a job. Today, hundreds of job-seeking veterans got a chance to network with more than forty local employers at a "Hiring our Heroes" job fair.

The fair is a private initiative put on by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and RecruitMilitary. Their goal is to help veterans and their spouses transition out of the military with a career.
"It's a win-win. We find them jobs and we get employees with good skills," said Don Esmond, Toyota Motor Sales.

Employers say its these unique skills that makes veterans the perfect candidate for their company.

"What makes a veteran special is their intangible skills. Leadership, management, work ethic, team work. This is what employers are looking for and it makes them head over shoulders higher than their peers," said Kevin Schmiegel, Founder of Hiring our Heroes.

Veterans coming out of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and those 25-years-old and younger are the main group facing the highest rate of unemployment. 'Hiring our Heroes' is hoping to help veterans brand themselves by marketing the skills they gained in the military.

"These events help them do a better job at branding themselves. They have ninety-seconds to tell them what they did in the military," said Schmiegel.
