Listen Locally: To OB's Finest

Summer has arrived and with July 4th around the corner, it’s recommended that you warm up your block partying chops so you don’t strain anything next weekend.

Luckily the annual OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-off takes place this Saturday 6/27 from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. For the purposes of Listen Locally, this is the pinnacle of this week’s local music.

Soak up some local music color with the scores of bands performing Saturday. Five stages will house an impressive assortment of musical styles and genres, ripe opportunity to discover a local SD band to fall in love with.

For full detail of who is playing when and where, as well as a map of stages in relation to the beer garden (because you know what’s important) visit obstreetfair.com and click on Entertainment. Below check out some of the Listen Locally music highlights that you can catch on Saturday!

The Shambles - Reason enough to get there bright and early. Relevant and continually rising, The Shambles are nothing new to the music scene. Their sound born from an eclectic range of influences -- garage-band and sixties pop, folk rock and throw in some Spanish ballads and punk rock and that gives you a general idea. All members are well-respected and dedicated musicians who formed the group in 1990 and have toured in several countries. Beat the crowds, find parking and catch these local gems at 10 a.m. at the Bacon Street Sun Stage.

Deadline Friday - Local jam band nominated last year in the Best Rock Category for SDMA’s. These rugged rock and roll gents deliver an all-American sound that grabs your attention while upholding quality and tradition. Nothing says ‘proud to be an American’ like a bowl of chili with a cold brew and solid rock n roll played in the streets at a neighborhood street fair. Enjoy wholeheartedly at 2:30 p.m. at the Main Stage.

Skirt Alert  - Although falsely advertising skirts in their name (there are in fact no skirts or girls for that matter in this group), Skirt Alert is funk jazz combo that eludes cool energy with a light touch. Comprised of well-experienced local musicians, Skirt-Alert will bring that chill funk right at the height of the day 3 p.m. on the Artist's Alley Stage.

Chi Club - Feel good funk and groove rock jams. Return performers at the OB Street Fair and, you’ll love the energizing yet mellow sound. They are lovers of the local music scene and are focused on bringing a positive message to the community. Get some of that good vibe at 4:30 p.m. at the 92107 Stage.

Stick Figure –Dub, reggae and rock steady, perhaps the most fitting mood music for a summer street fair in OB. Newly relocated to SD, Stick Figure, once the one-man show of Scott Woodruff, who records each instrument separately as well as lyrics, then laid down the instrumental tracks over one another in the studio to create his music. Saturday’s performance shouldn’t be quite that laborious as since moving to SD, Stick Figure picked up two-more musicians. Check them out at the Artists Alley Stage at 6 p.m.

Agua Dulce - Sultry Latin grooves with lyrics delivered in two tongues. Should inspire “vacation” dancing; you know the way your generally awkward limbs find themselves in sync and all of a sudden you shake you hips like, well, a saltshaker? As one of the closing acts of the evening (6:50 p.m. at the Main Stage) these muchachos will leave you in a fabulous mood.

Don’t miss this nice slice of the San Diego music pie!
