Listen Locally: Return of a Lost Art

What do you know about circular breathing? Nothing? Me neither, but Reggie Smith could school you in one session. One electrifying, toe-tapping, finger-snapping, head-nodding sesh.

Smith is nothing new to San Diego jazz music aficionados. Regarded as one of San Diego’s best kept secrets, he is a master of the sax --  three types of sax, to be accurate. He has played all over the world -- for audiences including two US presidents -- and in the company of jazz icons.

Smith’s brand of jazz sound is oh so smooth, sexy and appeals to any music lover. It's pleasently loud and perfect for that date who you love to gaze at, but too bad, you might not get much conversation in … darn.

The unique part about this week’s feature is it’s not only an evening event, right when that work whistle blows, yes, it’s happy hour, plus live entertainment with no cover.

This week we move beyond the darkness of night, the hipster clubs and best of all, the cover charge. We are returning to the lost art of the supper club, the lounge with quality live music.

Find this splendid experience in what has been widely regarded until recently as a nightclub. Red Circle Lounge, well-known nightspot in the heart of the Gaslamp, is teaming with Image Companies Enterprises to reignite the affair between great live music, dining and drinks with a supper club sentiment that reeks of ‘classic cool.’ Enter Redd Jazz Friday’s at the Red Circle Lounge. Showcasing local jazz and blues talents each week, it’s totally different than what’s out there right now.

We’ve gotten used to the Friday post-work routine and we scurry off to the closest watering hole to clock out till Monday. Redd Jazz is a whole different vibe. Whether you are sipping martinis or sucking back beers, it’s a new spin on the standard happy hour.

There is live music starting at 6 p.m., along with specials for happy hour, another dinner seating and entertainment at 8 p.m. until 9:15 p.m., when the spot transitions into the nightclub atmosphere and DJ entertainment.

This Friday’s show is sure to impress with Smith, and the show will keep you craving great live music.  If you can’t make it this week, keep your ears open, because buzz is sure to grow, and hopefully the concept overflows into more nights of the week.

Last week I caught Black Mambo’s act, which was a blast, had great food and drinks and all before it was dark out! The whole production is a welcome touch of class and jazz culture to the downtown scene, so go soak it up!

Word to the wise, if you care about being off your feet, then go early to claim bar seating, and dinner patrons, make a reservation, for goodness sake. This may just make you rethink $1 drafts and nachos after work: Stay classy, San Diego.
