No it’s not a gym workout; it’s an actual Olympic sport that originated in medieval Scotland. Ice Curling consists of players sliding stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area, much like a human-sized shuffle board.

Two teams consisting of four players each, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones across the ice curling sheet towards the house, a circular target marked on the ice. The goal is to get the highest score for each game, like most games played. The path of the rock may be influenced by two sweepers with brooms to alter the state of the ice in front of the stone. The strategy involved is what gives the sport it’s nickname, “Chess on Ice.”

You can see what the sport is all at a two-hour "Pick-Up Curling" event on January 8 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Iceoplex Fitness and Acquatic Center.  All experience levels are welcome and all equipment will be provided.  It is recommended that you wear soft, rubber soled shoes and layered, semi-warm clothing.  Tickets are $20
