Swanguen took third at nationals on Monday

A local mountain biking star who officials said tested positive for THC has three months to think about his alleged mistake.

Mountain biker J.D. Swanguen of San Diego has accepted a suspension after testing positive for a metabolite of marijuana or hashish, according to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Officials with the USADA said Tuesday that a sample collected from Swanguen on July 19 at the U.S. Mountain Bike National Championships tested positive for carboxy THC. All of his competitive results since then will be disqualified.

Swanguen had finished third in the men's pro downhill race on Monday in Granby, Colo.

Swanguen accepted a three-month period of ineligibility, which began Oct. 9, according to the agency. The 20-year-old's penalty can be reduced if he completes USADA's anti-doping educational program.
