The Elephant Pool Party Series at the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey kicked off on July 1. The parties celebrate “sun, summer and wild animal fun” at the San Diego Zoo.

“Sometimes, the elephants will completely submerge, splash each other or maybe even our guests,” Schwartz said.

Capybaras and a jaguar that live near the elephants also enjoyed aquatic enrichment during the pool party.

“Most people don’t believe me when I tell them,” Schwartz said of the zoo’s jaguar, who often dives under water. “This cat loves to swim, so keep an eye out for her.”

Humans also joined in the fun. Pool party guests enjoyed limbo and donned fun floaties.

People of all ages came out to see the animals at play. “Elephants -- you've just got to see them to believe it.... It's beautiful,” said Jim Bonsford, a fan of the zoo since 1939.
