Good Samaritans Help Capture Trolley Slashing Suspect

A downtown brawl turned into a stabbing Friday, San Diego police said. A man was stabbed in the abdomen with a box cutter and a woman was punched in the face and bitten on the hand.

The incident shut down the trolley in both directions at Park Boulevard and Broadway, said a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Transit System.

Jesse Gonzalez owns a market on Park Boulevard and Broadway. He says a passerby came running to the store and asked him to call 911.

"I said for what, and he said this guy is cut from side to side," said Gonzalez.

When he ran outside, he found two people on the ground, at least one of them bleeding with slashes across his belly.

Gonzalez said the attacker with the knife tried to get away, but several people were able to stop him.

"And I saw the girlfriend jump on the suspect and the guy knocked her to the ground, and then everybody jumped in.  Even the guy that was hurt, he went after the guy and hauled him down," said Gonzalez.

Both men were taken to the hospital. Police were not sure which man was the attacker and which was the victim.

The trolley reopened at 1:50 p.m.
