Feds OK 3rd Border Crossing

President George W. Bush has given final approval for a new border crossing east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The proposed crossing received a presidential permit Thursday. It would be built by the federal government and be connected to state Route 905 by a two-mile toll road to be built by the California Department of Transportation.

Officials said the $800 million cost of the project would be covered by toll fees.  The additional crossing is expected to ease travel and trade between the United States and Mexico.

There are two other ports of entry in San Diego County, in Otay Mesa and San Ysidro.
