Deep and Meaningful Victory

Volek led the Chargers to a 23-20 victory

The game may have been meaningless, but it showed the league more about Chargers than any other game this season.

Billy Volek led the Chargers (13-3) down the field in the final minute of Sunday’s 23-20 victory over the Washington Redskins (4-14) to run the Bolt’s winning streak to 11 games. Craig Elsten and Chris Ello with 619Sports.net broke down the win in a post-game podcast.

“Sure you say to yourself, this game didn’t matter,” Ello said,  “It wouldn’t have mattered if you lost, but the fact that you won matters.”

The victory shows that the Bolts may be the deepest team in the NFL. The Colts were routed 30-7 by the Bills and the Saints were beat 23-10 by the Panthers and head into the post season with a combined 5 losses in the final 3 weeks of the season.

“Other teams don’t have a second team that can even beat a bad team’s first team, the Chargers do,” Elsten said.

The game was also the first chance fans got to see first round draft pick wide receiver Buster Davis get significant action. He had been waiting for his opportunity to get some playing time and he caught 6 passes for 52 yards. Elsten and Ello said it points to just how deep the Charger’s receiving core is. The game also reinforced the idea that corners Quientin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie anchor the defense.

“Take out the starting defensive line, Redskins can’t move the ball, take out the safeties, Redskins can’t move the ball, take out the linebackers, Redskins can’t move the ball, take out the cornerbacks, boop boop boop, right down the field,” Elsten said.

With the playoffs starting next week, the game was the best-case scenario for the Bolts.

“Starters got in, starters put up points, reserves got in and reserves won the game,” Ello said, “You go into the locker room after this game and you feel like the momentum continues.”
